Mauritius Island is a multi-cultural
country; the reason is that when the island was discovered, which was by
the Dutch who landed on the island, then came the British, the French
and started to live on the island and brought slaves from India, Africa,
Madagascar and other places. After the abolition of slavery lot of the
slaves stayed on the island and started a new life. Chinese came to make
business and it happened that some business men stayed and married on
the island. This is what made Mauritius an island with almost all
cultures of the world. There is a big percentage of Indians living in
Mauritius whose ancestors were slaves, this is why there is a large
number of temples all around the island. One of the most visited and
popular temple of Mauritius is found at Grand Bassin. But in almost each
corner there is or a temple, or a church or a mosque. |
